Biography

Background & current role

Michael G. “Mike” Waltz is a former Republican U.S. Representative from Florida, Army veteran and former White House National Security Advisor. The House Historian records that he resigned from Congress on January 20, 2025 to enter the administration and later served as National Security Advisor in 2025.

On May 1, 2025, President Trump removed Waltz from the National Security Advisor role and announced plans to nominate him as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio took over the national-security-adviser duties on an interim basis. The change followed sustained scrutiny over Waltz’s creation of a Signal group chat that inadvertently included a journalist during planning discussions for U.S. strikes in Yemen.

The Senate confirmed Waltz as Representative of the United States to the United Nations on September 19, 2025 by a 47–43 vote. This profile therefore classifies him as “Changed administration role,” not simply as a departed official: his White House service ended, but he continued in the Trump administration in a Senate-confirmed diplomatic post.
