Biography

Background & current role

Mark Carney is Canada’s 24th Prime Minister and became leader of the Liberal Party in 2025. The Prime Minister’s Office biography notes his economics education at Harvard and Oxford and his earlier career in finance and public service.

Carney served as Governor of the Bank of Canada during the global financial crisis and later as Governor of the Bank of England. He also served in international climate-finance roles before entering Canadian electoral politics.
